How to Order Your College Preferences on the UHS Form
Rules from the 2026-27 admission policy and a Reach, Match, Safe method
✓ Official sourcesUpdated AA Checked by Ali Ahmad
On the UHS form you must list all public colleges of your seat category in order of preference, and the order is final after the deadline. Allotment is merit-cum-preference, so list colleges in the order you would actually attend them, not by last year's merit; a high first choice never costs you a lower one. Group them Reach, Match and Safe using last year's closing merits. Official source
The rules you are working with
| Rule | Public colleges | Private colleges |
|---|---|---|
| How many to choose | All colleges available for your seat category, in order of preference | No restriction on the number |
| Changing the order | Editable until the application deadline; after it the number and order are final | |
| A college not in your list | Cannot be allotted to you, in any list or upgradation | |
| Upgradation | Mandatory: you move up automatically when a higher preference opens | You may opt out at joining; the choice is final |
| Basis of allotment | Merit-cum-preference: your rank decides first, your order decides among the colleges your rank reaches | |
Order by what you want, not by last year's merit
Because allotment is merit-cum-preference, putting a high-merit college first never costs you a lower one: if your rank does not reach your first choice, the system moves to your second, third and so on. So the only question is which college would you rather attend. List the colleges you genuinely prefer first (city, hostel, distance from home, family), and the ones you would accept only if nothing else works last. Do not skip a college you would still take, because a skipped college is gone for good.
A simple three-group method
- Reach: colleges whose last final-list closing merit is above your aggregate by up to about 1.5 points. Put the ones you want most at the top; upgradation lists sometimes reach them.
- Match: colleges within 1.5 points either side of your aggregate. This is where you are most likely to land in the first list; order them by preference.
- Safe: colleges whose closing merit is clearly below your aggregate. Order them too; they are your fallback if the year's merit rises.
The merit predictor does this grouping for you. Enter your MDCAT aggregate, choose UHS Punjab, and it prints a suggested preference order (highest closing merit first, grouped Strong, Borderline and Unlikely) that you can copy and then rearrange within each group by your own preference. Every college's last closing merit, with the official list behind it, is on the MDCAT merit list.
What last year's numbers say
In the final 2025 UHS list the 17 public MBBS colleges closed within 1.36 points of each other (King Edward 94.87%, Narowal 93.51%), and the four public BDS colleges within 0.05 points. That narrow band means your order matters a great deal: two students with the same aggregate can land in colleges 300 km apart purely because of how they ordered the middle of their list.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out far-away colleges "to avoid being sent there". If your rank only reaches those colleges, leaving them out means no seat at all, not a nearer seat.
- Ordering by last year's merit instead of by preference. Merit order is only useful as a reality check for where you will probably land.
- Expecting to change the order after the deadline, or to decline an upgradation in a public college. Neither is allowed.
- Applying for MBBS and BDS on the same form. They are separate portals, separate fees and separate preference lists.
Frequently asked questions
How many colleges do I have to select on the UHS form?
For public-sector seats all colleges available for your seat category must be selected in order of preference; for private colleges there is no restriction on the number.
Can I change my college preference order after applying?
Only until the application deadline. After it the number and order of preferences are final and cannot be changed.
Should I put high-merit colleges first even if my aggregate is lower?
Yes, if you want them. Allotment is merit-cum-preference: if your rank does not reach your first choice the system goes to your next choices, so a high first choice does not cost you a lower one.
What if I leave a college out of my list?
It cannot be allotted to you in any selection or upgradation list. If your rank only reaches that college, you get no seat rather than a nearer one.
Is upgradation optional?
In public colleges it is mandatory and automatic. In private colleges you may opt out at joining, and the option once taken cannot be changed.
UHS form mein college preference kaise bharein?
Government seats ke liye apni category ke saare colleges order mein lagane lazmi hain. Jo college aap sach mein chahte hain woh pehle likhein, kyunke allotment merit-cum-preference par hoti hai: merit pehle dekha jata hai, phir aap ka order.
Kya door wala college list se nikal dena behtar hai?
Nahi. Jo college list mein nahi hoga woh kisi list ya upgradation mein nahi milega. Agar aap ka merit sirf usi college tak pohncha to seat bilkul nahi milegi, qareeb wali nahi.
UHS form mein college preference kaise bharein?
UHS ka form merit-cum-preference par chalta hai: pehle aap ka merit dekha jata hai, phir aap ka order. Is liye colleges ko us tarteeb se likhein jis tarteeb se aap wahan parhna chahte hain, pichhle saal ke merit ke hisaab se nahi. Pehla choice ooncha rakhne se neeche wala college nahi jata.
Deadline ke baad order change nahi hota aur government colleges mein upgradation lazmi hai. Predictor aap ke aggregate ke hisaab se Strong, Borderline aur Unlikely colleges ki tarteeb bana deta hai jise copy kar ke apni pasand se adjust karein.
