NUST and FAST Closing Merit: Positions, Not Percentages

Official sourcesUpdated Checked by Ali Ahmad

NUST does not publish a closing merit percentage. It publishes closing merit positions: the rank of the last candidate admitted to each programme, which it calls a reference only. FAST-NUCES publishes no program-wise closing merit; its cut-offs are set by the university each year. Percentages for either on other websites are estimates. Official source

Who publishes what

Many students search for a "closing merit" percentage for NUST or FAST. Neither university publishes one. This table sums up what each university without a closing percentage on this site does publish, from its own pages.

NUST: closing merit positions, not percentages

NUST ranks every applicant by one aggregate: 75% NUST Entry Test (NET) + 15% HSSC Part-1 + 10% SSC, under its General Merit Generation Criteria. Your place in that ranking is your merit position. For each programme NUST then publishes the closing merit position: the position of the last candidate admitted. Its Closing Merit Positions page says the positions are only a reference for choosing preferences, do not guarantee admission and change every year.

How to read it: a closing position of 1,500 means the last student admitted to that programme stood 1,500th in the NUST merit. If your own position is lower (a smaller number), you were ahead of that student. Because a position depends on how many students scored above you, the same aggregate can give a different position next year. A percentage you see elsewhere for "NUST closing merit" is not a figure NUST publishes.

What you can do: work out your aggregate with the NUST aggregate calculator (NET counts three-quarters, so each NET point adds 0.75), then compare your merit position with NUST's closing positions when your result is out. We will add NUST's official positions here once we can read the full list.

FAST: no closing merit at all

FAST-NUCES ranks applicants by 50% admission test + 40% HSSC + 10% SSC for computing programmes and 33% test + 50% HSSC + 17% SSC for engineering, according to its eligibility criteria. The same page says merit cut-off marks are determined by the university; FAST does not publish program-wise closing merits. Use the FAST aggregate calculator for your aggregate, and treat any "FAST closing merit" figure on another site as an estimate.

How to judge your chances without a closing percentage

  1. Calculate your aggregate with the official formula on the university's calculator page.
  2. For NUST, compare your merit position (not your percentage) with the closing positions NUST publishes.
  3. Apply to back-up options that do publish closing merits and check them in the merit predictor: UET Lahore, UET Taxila, COMSATS, PU, ITU and the medical lists.
  4. Read what closing merit means and how merit changes between lists.
